How to Start a Civil Rights Team

Any school in Maine with students in grades 3-12 can start a civil rights team, and there is zero cost attached. While the beginning of the school year is the ideal time to start a team, we agree with Martin Luther King when he said “The time is always right to do the right thing.” You can start a civil rights team in your school whenever you are ready, and we will offer structure and supports to aid this process.

If you might be interested in starting a team, here are some important steps you should take:

  1. Download relevant information, including:
  2. Share information with administration
  3. Get at least one adult to serve as an advisor
  4. Contact our office and we’ll send you an official registration form

These steps don’t need to happen in any particular order, although they should all occur before the civil rights team starts functioning. You should also feel free to contact our office with any questions you might have.
