  1. State Inspected product is for sale only within the State of Maine. USDA inspected product can be shipped interstate and sold on the internet. All domestically raised red deer/elk must be slaughtered/processed at an inspected establishment if offered FOR SALE.
  2. Most State Inspected and USDA Inspected establishments are also licensed for Custom slaughter/processing3. When scheduling for slaughter be sure to ask for an inspector to be present if you want to sell the product at retail or wholesale.
  3. Custom slaughter/processing means the product is marked "NOT FOR SALE" and cannot be sold. When the meat is intended as NOT FOR SALE, a record should be completed and given to the owner of the custom meat/poultry establishment. You may download a PDF file of the forms here.
