Ice Out Dates

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry will be tracking Maine lake "Ice-Out" this Spring. Finally! We are beginning to see some southern and south central Maine water bodies break free from the icy grip of a long Maine winter. Just a few years ago we experienced record early ice out (2010) on many lakes and it will be interesting to see if we will have any record late ice out this Spring. Be careful out there, the water is still very COLD!

What's Ice Out?

This topic has often been debated. For the purposes of this web page, we will consider "ice-out" to be when you can navigate unimpeded from one end of the water body to the other. There may still be ice in coves or along the shoreline in some areas but when a person can traverse the entire water body without being stopped by ice floes, we will consider the ice to be out.
