Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence

Meet the 2012 Governor's Award Recipients

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is committed to improving our State’s regulatory climate and strengthening our culture of cooperation with those we serve. As part of that effort, the Department and Governor Paul R. LePage invite you to participate in our annual Governor’s Awards of Environmental Excellence. The awards program honors businesses, not-for-profit organizations, public entities and new ventures for their extraordinary efforts to protect and improve Maine’s environment.

Through this awards program, Maine DEP will celebrate and spotlight those who serve as a model for creative new ways to shift a culture toward sustainability. We are looking to recognize applicants with projects and programs born from innovation and collaboration that have resulted in measurable environmental and economic benefits, including investment in infrastructure and the creation of good jobs. Successful candidates will be those who are solving environmental challenges through constructive and creative solutions that go beyond standard techniques or regulatory compliance requirements.  You can meet last year’s recipients here on our website.

Self-nomination is encouraged. Award applications will be subject to a thorough screening process that involves a review of technical merit; an evaluation of environmental benefits and sustainable use of Maine’s natural resources; and a review of an applicant’s compliance record, if applicable.

All nomination applications must be submitted to the department by COB on Friday, February 22, 2013. Governor LePage and DEP Commissioner Patricia W. Aho will present the awards on May 22.

We encourage you to submit an application describing how your project has demonstrated environmental excellence and improved Maine’s environment and thank you for your commitment to protecting Maine’s environment and ensuring a sustainable economy for future generations.
