Test Method Changes
Certification testing will change from a pencil and paper test to a computerized test. Read the Q & A below for more details.
Present Way

New Way

Why the change?
The change will provide operators with several benefits: the option to take the test as often as one wishes, elimination of the exam filing deadline, the ability to schedule the test at a time convenient to you (Monday through Saturday, at 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM), a better testing environment, and getting your test results immediately.
When does the change take place?
Computer based testing option begins in February of 2012. Paper based testing will be available at least once a year.
Will the test questions be different?
No, both the paper and computer based tests will have the same question set. Maine will be using the ABC standardized tests. The Very Small Water System remains 50 multiple-choice questions and the other exams will all be 100 multiple-choice questions. The passing grade is still 70 percent.
Who runs the test sites?
Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP). For more information on AMP and the testing service go to www.goAMP.com
Where are the new test sites?
The test sites in Maine are located in Portland and a site to be determined in the Bangor area. Some candidates may find out-of-state sites more convenient than the in-state sites. See www.goAMP.com for all locations.
What are the new test dates?
There are no designated test dates for computerized tests. You schedule when you want to take the test. Testing times are Monday through Saturday, at 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM, depending upon availability at the test site. Paper tests remain as the last full week in March and October for 2012. Applications must be postmarked the first Saturday in February and September.
How do I pay the testing service?
You can pay online using a credit card or by mail with a company check or money order payable to AMP (personal checks, purchase orders or vouchers are not accepted). There is a $25 fee for any returned company check. Payment for paper exams remains the same. Checks or Money Orders made payable to Treasurer Sate of Maine.
What is the cost to take a computerized certification test?
The cost for a Very Small Water System Exam, 50 questions is $78; the cost for Class I-IV Treatment or Distribution 100 question tests is $87. This is the examination fee; successful examinees will have a separate licensing fee.
How do I apply to take the computerized test?
You will be able to apply online or by mail directly to AMP.
How do I apply to take the paper test?
Click here for an application to take the paper test.
How do I schedule my certification test?
Applicants can schedule an appointment on-line (24 hours/7 days a week) or by phone. Applicants for paper tests must apply using this form.
What do I bring to the test site?
Two forms of identification (one must be a current government-issued photo ID with signature) and a non-programmable calculator. Pencils and scratch paper will be provided. No other writing instruments or personal belongs are allowed. If you wear special glasses when working at a computer, you should bring those glasses.
Can I pay at the test site?
No, you must pay in advance when you schedule your exam.
What if I am late for my 9:00 or 1:30 test time?
AMP policy allows candidates to still take the exam even if they are 15 minutes late. If you are later than 15 minutes, you will not be allowed to take the test.
What if I can’t make my scheduled test time?
You may reschedule an appointment one time without penalty if you contact AMP a minimum of two business days prior to your scheduled examination date.
How long do I have to complete the test?
The same as the written test, Very Small Water System tests will be allowed 2 hours, all other exams will have 3 hours (running time) to complete the exam.
I’m not familiar with computers or computer testing. Will that hurt my ability to pass the test?
Before starting the test, you may complete a short exercise to become familiar with the computer, question layout, and features of the computerized testing. You choose the correct answer by using a mouse or typing the appropriate letter. Operators with limited computer skills have no problem completing the test. To try the new exam format, go here. Selections may ask for a log in. You may use your name. This is to allow you to come back to the demo at a later date.
What material do I get at the test site?
The ABC formula sheet, pencil and scratch paper are provided.
When do I get my results?
Your test results are printed and given to you immediately after completing the test.
After passing, what do I need to do to get my license?
You will be provided a license application and directions will be included with your passing score report. This will need to be submitted to the Board of Licensure for initial and upgraded licenses.
If I don’t pass, how do I retake the test?
To retake a test, follow the instructions on the failing score report.
Does this change affect my ability to get reciprocity in other states?
No, the computerized test is still an ABC test, just like the written exam. With any reciprocity, you must still meet all the requirements of the state you are applying to for licensure.
