Department of Marine Resources to Hold Follow-Up Public Meeting on Aquaculture Program

Maine Department of Marine Resources invites the public to attend an informational meeting and conversation about the science of shellfish aquaculture on July 31, 2014. The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Penobscot Community School at 66 North Penobscot Road in Penobscot.

The purpose of the meeting is to continue the conversation with local community members and industry stakeholders that was started during a previous meeting on April 30.

During the first meeting, the department provided information on its aquaculture lease and license application and review process and answered questions from landowners, local business owners and aquaculturists.

“We had a very constructive conversation during the April 30 meeting,” said Department of Marine Resources Deputy Commissioner Meredith Mendelson. “We had an opportunity to clarify the review and administrative process for leases and licenses, to discuss issues of impact on our coastal economy and ecology, and to listen to the concerns and feedback of stakeholders.

A number of the concerns we heard at the first meeting relate to how aquaculture interacts with wild marine resources and the natural environment, so we’re holding this second meeting with the intent of trying to share information related to ecological impacts.”

Maine Sea Grant staff will again facilitate the meeting and representatives from the Department of Marine Resources will lead the discussion.
