Notice to Atlantic Herring Fishery: Atlantic Sea Herring Management Plan Area 1A, Effective October 1, 2012

ASMFC Atlantic Herring Section members from the States of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts discussed 2012 Area 1A effort controls at a meeting in Warwick, RI on September 21, 2012. The states were unable to agree upon the number of landing days per week beginning October 1, 2012. As a result, the default will allow for seven landings days per week for the rest of the calendar year OR until changed by an additional notice.

Landing Restrictions:

Effective October 1, 2012 at 00:01 until further notice, it is lawful to land Atlantic herring in the State of Maine taken from ASMFC Management Area 1A all seven days a week unless changed by a further notice.

Exceptions:

• Any vessel may land herring as an incidental catch caught in ASMFC Management Area 1A in any Maine port, as long as such herring do not comprise more than 2,000 pounds per trip and such herring does not constitute more than 10% of the catch by weight.
• Fixed gear fisherman (weirs and stop seines) are not subject to this provision.
