10 Year Rotational Management Plan

A 10 Year Rotational Management Plan will be implemented for Zone 2 last season and is currently being phased in. Rotational management promotes increased landings with the same or less amount of effort, resulting in higher economic yield from the fishery. Similar to crop rotation on land, areas of the coast are divided into three rotations. For the 2013-14 season, 7 areas shaded in BLUE are closed for rebuilding, whereas areas shaded in YELLOW and PINK will be open; these 7 closures are the same as last year and will be in effect all season long. They are: Bold Coast, Little Kennebec/Englishman Bay, Addison, Frenchman’s Bay, Swan’s Island, Isle Au Haut Bay and Upper Pen Bay. Next year, these seven areas will open for harvest while the rest of Zone 2 rotates closed for rebuilding. There will be a 70 day season and a 15 gallon daily possession limit in Zone 2 this season.

For the 2013-2014 season, the following areas will be closed under the rotational management plan.

Rotational Closures through time

Pictured above Zone 2 Rotational Harvest Schedule was implemented last season and is currently being phased in. Areas that are open for harvest rotate on a yearly schedule. For the first two years, areas shaded in PINK and YELLOW are open. Next year, (2014-15 season), one third of the coast is open in any given year.
