Peak Time for Leaf Peepers in Maine
AUGUSTA, Maine - October 6, 2004
Now is the time to experience spectacular foliage in Maine’s western lakes and mountains, central river valleys, and the Downeast coast accordingto the Department of Conservation’s fourth fall foliage report released today.
Leaves are at peak color in the foliage tracking zones covering the northern top of the state. Leaf drop in that region is moderate, or less than 50 percent. In the Rangeley Lake area of western Maine, leaf color is high and nearing 70 percent throughout the tree canopy. Forest Ranger Mark Rousseau expects this weekend to be the ideal time to visit the four-season destination.
“Some spots around the lake and mountainsides are at peak and most foliage in the valley will be at that point soon,” said Rousseau. “The views from Rangeley Lake State Park and the Height of Land on Route 17 are terrific.”
Tracking zones in the central, mid eastern, and Downeast parts of the state also have high leaf color. Trees in the Bangor region and towns along the Kennebec River have shed as little as 10 percent of their leaves thus far, while locations between Calais and Millinocket have heavier leaf drop. Foliage on the southern coast is now moderate, or 50 percent toward peak.
