Foliage in southern Maine strikes up its color
AUGUSTA, Maine - October 13, 2004
Coastal and interior southern Maine is the place to visit this weekend for spectacular foliage accordingto the Department of Conservation’s fall foliage report released today.
While most foliage in the northern and mid-western parts of the state is past peak, the overall color of the tree canopy in the coastal tracking zone stretching from Kittery to Belfast is high, or 70 to 85 percent toward peak. Recent wind and rain did little to effect leaf drop in the south coast, central Maine, and Downeast locations, as trees in those areas still show 60 to 70 percent of their leaves.
Many popular summer attractions on the coast, like Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, have great views of the fall colors this time of year.
“People know we have the lighthouses and the great ocean views, but we also have some very beautiful foliage on the trees in and around the park,” said Park Manager John Scott.
Bradbury Mountain State Park near Freeport offers panoramic views of foliage from the summit of a short walking trail. The trails at Camden Hills State Park also reveal fall color for those on a foliage tour along the coast.
