SPRAY BAFFLE FOR
CONTROL OF WHITE PINE WEEVIL
WITH A GARDEN SPRAYER
A spray baffle can be made for attachment to
the nozzle of a garden sprayer to improve spray coverage on
leaders of host trees for control of white pine weevil*. The
baffle is fashioned from a No. 2 1/2 tin can as shown above. The
ends of the can are removed, and the can is cut down the side. A
hole is punched in the side opposite the cut, large enough to fit
the bushing between the nozzle tip and the nozzle body. To
install the spray baffle, place the nozzle tip inside the baffle
and insert the nozzle body from outside and screw on tight.
A 4-foot rod with 3 1/2 feet of hose attached
is recommended for spraying all trees up to 10 feet. Rods can be
lengthened by adding 2-foot sections available from spray
equipment manufacturers. Inexpensive 1/4-inch aluminum tubing and
standard 1/4-inch fittings may also be used to make spray rods of
any desired length. Bamboo or similar light-weight support
material should be bound to the tubing for rigidity.
