  • MFS Stewardship Program
Since 1991, the Maine Forest Service has helped more than 5,000 Maine woodland owners become Forest Stewards by developing Woodland Management Plans and putting them into action. The Maine Forest Stewardship Program can help pay a portion of the cost of having a Woodland Management Plan drawn up for your woodland by a professional Forester.

The program also can help with projects that improve forest health, water quality and wildlife habitats, as well as planting, thinning, pruning, and other activities. You can apply for "cost-share" assistance for developing the Woodland Management Plan; once the plan is completed, funds may be available for projects to implement the plan. The Maine Forest Stewardship Program is federally funded, and available money varies from year to year. Cost sharing through the Maine Forest Stewardship Program is administered as a partial reimbursement for approved projects completed with the help of your consulting Forester. Most important to you, Forest Stewardship can help pay for the priorities you have: improving wildlife habitat, protecting water quality, thinning, planting, pruning, disease and pest control and more.

To find out if the Maine Forest Stewardship Program is the right choice for you, or to request an application, call the Maine Forest Service toll free in state at (800) 367-0223, or at (207) 287-2791. Or [download an application] while you're here.
