Coastal Marine Geology

The Coastal Marine Geology Section conducts research along the Maine coast. Our two geologists conduct coastal hazard studies related to sea-level rise, coastal storm flooding, and rates of beach erosion and bluff retreat. Seafloor maps are used for ocean energy siting and transmission lines. We produce reports and maps on subjects such as beach and dune geology, nearshore sand sources for beach nourishment, and coastal bluffs and landslides. We study dredged material disposal sites, marine habitats, oil spills, coastal ocean circulation, and offshore minerals related to specific state or regional needs. Our research is often funded through external competitive research grants and we frequently collaborate with other state agencies and university scientists. We use geological, geophysical, surveying, and oceanographic instruments to sample and survey shorelines and the seafloor. Our scientific information is used by other state agencies, local governments, businesses, and the public involved in the coastal zone. Much of our work goes through a scientific peer review and our findings are sometimes released at public meetings. We have served as expert witnesses for the State of Maine. Marine and coastal geology research results are published both in print and on the web in the form of reports, maps, and scientific papers.
