Figure 6. Wall of active quarry at Mosquito Mountain. Horizontal surfaces are natural fractures (sheeting joints) that determine the thickness of blocks that can be removed. Notice that groundwater is seeping through the fracture below the truck, while the one to the right edge of the photo is dry. The smooth vertical faces have been cut with a wire saw. The rough vertical faces to the right have been broken away more quickly by drilling a series of vertical holes and filling them with an expansive mortar compound. (Click to show labeled features.)
