Photo 7. Most of the metamorphic rock along this coastal exposure is gray, well-layered rock. A less common, rusty-weathering variety of metamorphic rock crosses from the lower right to the left-center part of this photo. It is a mica-rich rock (called schist) that probably represents a shale or mudstone that was part of the original sedimentary sequence.
