Figure 8. This gray rock enclosed in granite is called a xenolith, or "foreign rock." It was a solid rock fragment that was engulfed by the molten rock which then solidified to granite. The layers in the xenolith indicate that it was a sedimentary rock, probably a piece of the Kittery Formation. This relationship indicates that the Kittery Formation is older than the granite.
