March 15, 2002 Earthquake in Central Maine

The Canadian Seismic Network has reported to Weston Observatory that a small earthquake occurred at 4:58:31 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Friday, March 15, 2002 in central Maine.

The following parameters have been calculated for the earthquake (this is a preliminary determination):

Preliminary magnitude	1.9
Preliminary location	45.41 degrees North latitude; 69.00 degrees West longitude
Depth	shallow (approx. 5 km)
This places the epicenter about 5 miles northeast of Brownville Junction.

Further Information:

This event was so small that it was imperceptible on the Canadian Seismic Network Hourly plot for 21:00 to 22:00 (UT) on March 15, 2002. Only by careful analysis of the data could seismologists determine the approximate location and size of the event.

Nobody reported feeling this earthquake to the Maine Geological Survey. This is not surprising, since earthquakes below magnitude 2 are rarely noticed.
