Coastal Places, Processes, and Partnerships:

Balancing values and expectations on Maine's beaches

Concurrent I

The Status of Maine's Beaches in 2011

  • Peter Slovinsky, Maine Geological Survey
  • Student beach profiling volunteers from Scarborough Middle School

The summer of 2010 was a lean beach season, with beach erosion plaguing many of southern Maine's beaches, especially early in the season.  Analysis of data collected by volunteers from the Southern Maine Beach Profile Monitoring Program since the last report in 2009 show changes to many beaches. Maine Geological Survey's beach monitoring program also documented additional changes in longshore beach features. These changes, including observed recovery and noted impacts to recreational beach space, are reviewed.
