Newry Mines, Newry, Maine

Newry Mine

Type of Mineral Deposit

A cluster of granite pegmatite quarries including the Dunton Quarry, Nevel Quarry, Bell Pit, Martin Quarry, Crooker Quarry, and several new workings. Besides gem tourmaline, many interesting and rare minerals have been found here, such as beryl, columbite, cassiterite, eosphorite, lepidolite, spodumene, triphylite, and many others.

Location

Newry, Oxford County, western Maine

Directions

Go on U. S. Route 2 to the small village of Hanover, Maine (between Bethel and Rumford). Just west of Gordie Howe's store in Hanover, turn north onto Howard Pond Rd. Go about 2.2 miles and turn right at sign for "Plumbago Mtn. Farm". Go up driveway to Bob Brown's residence. Park here to consolidate vehicles and get further instructions on proceeding to the mines. Mine road continues straight ahead through field just beyond house. This trip requires driving on a narrow dirt woods road for nearly 4 miles. Although the road is generally in good condition, there may be muddy spots or rough stretches with rocks in the road. Drivers must have a 4-wd truck or SUV with good ground clearance.
