Figure 1. Ice-margin positions of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during deglaciation from the southernmost position of the glacier on Long Island and offshore of southern New England (red line marked 28.0-23.5) to northern New Hampshire and Vermont (purple line marked 13.8); numbers are in thousand-years (13.8 = 13,800 calendar years). The blue line marked 14.6 is extended from New Hampshire into Maine by work in the Merrimac River valley and in the Ossipee River valley (Ridge and others, 2001), and is extrapolated from there to the west shore of the Penobscot River valley south of Bangor based on surficial geologic mapping by the Maine Geological Survey.
