Case Studies

The following case studies describe the steps school districts took to implement a proficiency-based, learner-centered instructional system. Featured schools share their best practices, with the hope of serving as models for other Maine districts to reform their instructional systems.

Following the publication of these six initial case studies, the Department completed a thematic analysis to identify common themes. Threads of Implementation: A Thematic Review of Six Case Studies of Maine School Districts Implementing Proficiency-Based Systems provides learnings that can inform the planning of other districts as they transition to issuing diplomas starting in 2018 to students based on demonstrated proficiency.

This Center for Best Practice is a collaboration between the Maine Department of Education and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, made possible by the contributions of the Maine schools that share their stories.
