Guidelines

School counselors can use this helpful information in three areas of their work:

  1. Counseling Program Administration. Guidelines in K-12 comprehensive program creation and implementation, dropout prevention and record retention.
  2. Ethics & Standards. Provides ethical guidelines for counselors and gives student standards to address student-centered learning.
  3. School Disruption. Tools for counselors to use when helping students experiencing educational disruption.

 

Counseling Program Administration

  • ASCA National Model Executive Summary. How are students different as a result of what school counselors do? To help answer this question, ASCA created the ASCA National Model?, which is a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program.
  • Maine's Comprehensive School Counseling Program Model (PDF, 2.40MB). This model meets the requirements of the law (Chapter 125, School Approval) stating all districts must have a K-12 Comprehensive Guidance plan.?You will find helpful information to move a school counselor program from design to implementation to evaluation.
  • Maine Dropout Prevention Guide (MDPG) (PDF, 2.54MB). This document helps public school personnel keep currently enrolled students in school and on track toward completing their high school graduation requirements, and encourage those students who have already dropped out to return to school and complete their graduation requirements.
  • Record Retention for Schools. See the disposition schedule of all Maine school records, including disciplinary notes.

 

Ethics & Standards

  • ASCA Ethical Standards. A guide for the ethical practices of all professional school counselors, supervisors/directors of school counseling programs and school counselor educators regardless of level, area or population.
  • Maine DOE Coordinated School Health Guidelines. Meet the requirements for Standards-Based Learning to achieve a comprehensive counseling program in your school.
  • Student Standards. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) provides these national standards to help counselors identify and prioritize the specific attitudes, knowledge and skills that students should be able to demonstrate as a result of participating in a school counseling program.

 

Students Experiencing School Disruption

  • Team Meeting Checklist. Facilitate the process of transitioning the student to school due to homelessness, foster care/DHHS placement, correctional facility placement and/or mental health crisis or psychiatric facility. The information on the checklist is to be used to promote discussion on the topics relevant to the student?and can only be shared with the guardian's permission. This tool was created by Keeping Maine's Children Connected, a group that no longer exists.
