School districts in Maine and across the country that have successfully implemented proficiency-based learning systems have addressed three critical areas: policy, practice and community engagement. While many districts and schools follow a similar sequence of planning and implementation, each pathway to implementation will depend on the individual capacity and needs of a particular district, school or community.
The diagram below illustrates the major steps and strategies that districts and schools will need to address working toward the implementation of a proficiency-based learning system and diploma.
To guide district and school leaders through the planning process, the Maine Department of Education and the Great Schools Partnership have created a comprehensive online self-assessment tool for Maine School Administrative Units to support action planning for proficiency-based learning.
