Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test

In Maine, the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) was administered to all sophomore students during the 2013-14 school year in an effort to help prepare them for the SAT administered in their third year of high school. The 2013 PSAT/NMSQT was held Wednesday, Oct. 16. As in the past, the Maine Department of Education funded this assessment.

In our ongoing commitment to supporting all Maine learners, during the 2013-14 school year the Department will also fund the cost for students who wish to take either the PSAT/NMSQT or the ACCUPLACER® during their junior year of high school. Students electing to take the PSAT during their junior year may use it as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. Please note that testing beyond the SAT during students’ third year of high school in entirely optional.

Scores from PSAT/NMSQT are not reported for accountability purposes. PSAT/NMSQT results may be used to provide diagnostic information about student learning and to inform instruction in reading, writing and mathematics.
