There are many exciting changes happening in EMS education. Some of these changes have been in motion for over a decade. The EMS Agenda for the Future, a NHTSA document published in 1996, was created to determine the most important directions and continued evolutions of EMS. Out of this document was born the EMS Education Agenda for the Future, which was published in 2000 with an intended roll out or implementation date of 2010. An enormous amount of work has been done to make this transition achievable. At their May 5, 2010, meeting, the Board of EMS adopted the National Education Standards - one component of the EMS Education Agenda for the Future -for the Emergency Medical Responder (First Responder), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B), and Paramedic (EMT-P) levels. For the time being, implementing this change will be a choice for Training Centers. The Agenda contains minimal changes in comparison to our current curricula. Many of the differences present instructors with greater flexibility for targeting instruction to specific audiences, resulting in enhanced comprehension and improved student competences. Scope of practice changes, another component of the Agenda, will be addressed by the Maine EMS Medical Direction and Practices Board (MDPB) as they continue work on the next protocol revision. Go the EMS Educator Links on this web page to learn more. As of January 1, 2010 courses leading to Maine EMS licensure that are held in Maine must be conducted by a Maine EMS Authorized Training Center.
