There are many exciting changes happening in EMS education. Some of these changes have been in motion for over a decade. The EMS Agenda for the Future, a NHTSA document published in 1996, was created to determine the most important directions and continued evolutions of EMS. Out of this document was born the EMS Education Agenda for the Future, which was published in 2000 with an intended roll out or implementation date of 2010.  An enormous amount of work has been done to make this transition achievable.

Maine has begun the process of aligning its EMS education with the EMS Education Agenda for the Future. Accepting the Agenda strengthens the Maine's EMS education infrastructure and aligns us with nationally recognized licensure programs and license levels.

At their May 5, 2010, meeting, the Board of EMS adopted the National Education Standards - one component of the EMS Education Agenda for the Future -for the Emergency Medical Responder (First Responder), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B), and Paramedic (EMT-P) levels. For the time being, implementing this change will be a choice for Training Centers.

The Agenda contains minimal changes in comparison to our current curricula. Many of the differences present instructors with greater flexibility for targeting instruction to specific audiences, resulting in enhanced comprehension and improved student competences.

Scope of practice changes, another component of the Agenda, will be addressed by the Maine EMS Medical Direction and Practices Board (MDPB) as they continue work on the next protocol revision.

Training Centers and course sponsors may submit a course or program for inclusion in the calendar by completing the "Education and Training Opportunities Form".

We are excited to announce our new online learning management system!

We are hopeful this will become the home of many quality educational programs, all providing continuing education hours (CEH) online to Maine EMS providers.

Our first educational program is the  2011 Protocol Update. This program will be considered equivalent to a live update. CEH credits will be given and certificates of completion will be issued. The program is available at our new learning site    http://www.memsed.org/lms/

To sign in on the site, click the link below:

You will use your MEMSRR user name and password. If you are not a MEMSRR user you will need to use the forgot  password link and your sign-in information will be emailed to you. If you have problems with signing in please email  maine.ems@maine.gov and we will assist you as soon as possible.

Once you've logged in, proceed to the program titled 2011 Protocol Update.  Please note there are many resources linked to the course on MEMSEd and on our MEMS website on the education page ( 2011 protocols, white papers, FAQs etc). Following the program you will be given a short exam and evaluation form then issued a certificate. MEMSEd will also track your CEHs and add them to the licensure program.

Airway Module

Ambulance Vehicle Operators Course (AVOC)

  • AVOC Instructor PowerPoint Presentation (ZIP) is a zip folder containing the 2009 AVOC PowerPoint presentation file and associated video files. You'll need to download (save) the zip folder to your hard drive and then extract the files to a new folder. Once unzipped and saved, the PowerPoint presentation will be able to find and use the video files that are linked to the presentation.

Continuing Education Hours (CEH)

  • CEH Roster - Revised February 28, 2011 (PDF)

    In order to ensure that CEHs are entered into the Maine EMS CEH system in a timely manner, return the original roster to the EMS office (that approved the program) within THREE days of completion of the program. The regional EMS office or Training Center will forward the original roster to Maine EMS for data entry. Program sponsors, instructors, regional offices and Training Centers should keep photocopies of rosters.

    There are two rosters that may be downloaded, one in PDF format and the other in MS Word format. Both rosters were developed as forms, which allows the user to fill-in certain parts of the roster before printing it.

    Please destroy any old rosters that you may have. The revised CEH rosters must be used for all CEH programs conducted on or after March 31, 2011.

    Reminder: If the correct license number and name are not clearly entered on the roster CEH credit will not be given.

Domestic Violence - Improving EMS Response

The Maine EMS Education Committee in concert with the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence has developed a Continuing Education Program for EMS providers on Improving EMS Response to Domestic Violence.

Each class is team taught by a member of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and an EMS provider.  The program has been pre-approved for 1.5 hours in Category #1 – Operations and Category #10 - EMD Special Needs.

To schedule a class in your area please contact Jill Berkley from the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence at 207-430-8334 or jill@mcedv.org She will schedule the two instructors and provide certificates of completion for those who attend.

PIFT training must follow this curriculum and paramedic services operating under this expanded scope of practice must be approved by Maine EMS. Only trained and Maine EMS approval PIFT services will be able to provide PIFT care.

2011 Protocols (effective December 1, 2011) and Training Material

Protocol update training must be conducted by a Maine EMS licensed Paramedic-level Instructor Coordinator who has completed the 2011 Protocol Update Train-The-Trainer program, and who has received permission from Maine EMS or from a Maine-EMS-authorized Training Center to conduct the program.

Maine Prehospital Treatment Protocol Books ( effective December 1, 2011) are available for purchase from Maine EMS:

Cost:

    • $5.00 per book for tax exempt agencies – if picked up at Maine EMS.
    • $5.25 per book for those required to pay Maine sales tax (e.g. individuals, or non-tax exempt organizations) – if picked up at Maine EMS
    • $6.00 per book for tax exempt agencies – if mailed.
    • $6.30 per book for those required to pay sales tax (e.g. individuals, or non-tax exempt organizations) – if mailed
                     
      Contact Maine EMS for case discount price (a case contains eighty-eight protocol books)

Payment methods:

    • Cash, check or money order.  Make check or money order payable to: Treasurer of State
    • Credit card – Maine EMS accepts MasterCard, Visa or Discover cards
    • Purchase Order  (EMS Services, organizations and government entities only)

Purchase Options:

    • Send a check, money order or purchase order to: Maine EMS, 152 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0152.  Include the address to which the book(s) will be sent and number of books requested;
    • Send a credit card purchase request to Maine EMS.  The request must include:
    • Credit card type (MasterCard, Visa, Discover);
    • Credit card number;
    • Credit card expiration date;
    • Name of holder as it appears on the card; and,
    • The three digit security code found on the back of the card;
    • Address to which the book(s) will be mailed;
    • Number of books requested.
    • Call Maine EMS at 207-626-3860 with a purchase order or credit card number.
