Jobs & Training - 58th Maine State Police Training Troop

Week 5

This week the 58th RTT concentrated on learning how to detect intoxicated drivers. We spent most of the week learning how to conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFSTs) and how to determine whether an individual is too impaired to drive. After a long day of practicing these tests on each other, we took a trip to a Bangor entertainment spot and conducted SFSTs on volunteers in the local area. We were able to apply all of our skills in a real-world learning scenario. The next night we conducted more practical applications, simulating a vehicle stop and going through the process from contact with the driver to the decision whether to arrest or not.

Two days this week were spent on learning how to conduct interviews and interrogations. The Troop learned how to pick up on verbal and physical clues that aid us in determining whether someone is telling the truth, and the best way to talk to witnesses, suspects, and anyone else we need to gain information from during the course of our duties.

PT and defensive tactics training continued progressing this week; the Troop spent more time doing CrossFit and swimming exercises as well as improving our defensive tactics techniques and learning how to remove uncooperative subjects from a vehicle.

The 58th RTT has just passed the mid-point of our training, but there is a lot left to do. We are charging ahead to the next four weeks of training. Our quote this week: "Pride is the personal commitment that over time separates excellence from mediocrity."
