Jobs & Training - 59th Maine State Police Training Troop

Week 6

Week six came to a close after extensive learning in the classroom. The focus of this week was a continuation of NetRMS; the State Police reporting system, as well as Criminal Law and Motor Vehicle Law. We had several very knowledgeable instructors who were able to demonstrate and explain the application and enforcement of Maine Criminal Law as well as Maine Motor Vehicle Law.

As Troopers we will be working extensively in the enforcement of traffic law and we must be capable in interpreting and enforcing the laws. We owe it to the people of the state of Maine and those visiting to provide the most competent and complete enforcement and explanations for our actions. We were given instructions on how to navigate through Maine's statutes as well as what statutes to apply to violations. Later in the afternoon we were given the opportunity to ride with Troopers to observe motor vehicle violations. If we were to see a violation we stopped the vehicle and acted accordingly.

Throughout the week the 59th continued to hone our defensive tactic techniques and focused on the appropriate use of force and when to apply this force. We have learned that in order to commit these skills to muscle memory we must work each move over and over again. In scenarios where we need to effect an arrest and physical force is necessary we have the opportunity to utilize the techniques we have learned. The life-like training we are receiving is no doubt going to prepare us to control those who may seem uncontrollable.

The 59th Recruit Training Troop had an extensive week of physical fitness. CrossFit is still the basis of our workouts and it is exciting to see the improvement from all of the Recruits as well as the Cadre. Even though time is sparse it needs to be instilled in all law enforcement that working out is part of the job. In order to be at the top of your game you must be prepared not only mentally but physically as well.

The Troop ended the week learning about high risk stops. We received instruction in the classroom on when these stops are necessary and a briefing on how to perform them. We were then able to apply these stops by using training guns and training ammunition. The Troop was given several different scenarios we were to act upon in a competent and efficient manner.

The Troop is working together and training at an advanced level. We are eager to see what the future weeks hold and are continuing to come together as a whole. The positive attitudes and determined minds within the Troop are going to push us through the last third of our advanced training. Our quote for the week continues to build on our foundation of how we are training. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit."
