62nd Maine State Police Training Troop
The 62nd Recruit Training Troop spent three days at the firing range this week. Recruits fired pistols and were introduced to the patrol rifle as well. We built on the marksmanship skills we developed in our respective basic courses. Recruits engaged targets from varying distances and firing positions. We learned to fire faster and more accurately. Recruits performed several courses of fire after elevating their heart rate to demonstrate the effects of stress on our fine motor skills.
The 62nd RTT conducted defensive tactics training again reinforcing discipline and fine motor control under stress, by conducting scenarios while utilizing Simunitions. It is fitting that this weeks quote is "discipline must be habit so ingrained that it is stronger than the excitement of battle or the fear of death" General George S. Patton.
The Troop received instruction on courtroom testimony. We discussed techniques defense attorneys use during cross examination. We learned that many of these techniques are overcome by good preparation, knowing your report, and being confident. We learned that you can have a great case report with good testimony yet fail to prove the elements of the crime to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Recruits of the 62nd RTT had a class on infant death investigation instructed by Sergeant Love. We learned that there are many challenges to this type of investigation and how the first responder interacts with the suspect can aid the detective or hinder them.
As the weeks continue to pass, the Recruits of the 62nd RTT look forward with great anticipation to, their opportunity for continued advanced training and the right to be called a Maine State Trooper.
