The Maine Department of Education is committed to providing professional development programs and materials that will help familiarize educators with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The NoteShare Notebooks that are found below contain the complete Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, organized by grade span. The notebooks include links to national resources and professional development activity materials, all embedded within the content of the standards where it is most appropriate. As new resources become available they will be included in these notebooks.
Please look to these resources as a book-study approach to the standards. If you have any issues accessing the materials contained within the notebooks please feel free to contact Michele Mailhot, Mathematics Specialist for the Maine DOE.
Noteshare Notebooks:
We encourage schools and districts to utilize these materials as a program of learning, organized here in a continuum of instructional modules.
The materials in the modules below provide
- a brief background of the Common Core State Standards Initiative,
- how to read the documents, and
- an approach to studying the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Module 1: Introduction
Module 2: Alignment
Module 3: Implementation
We recommend that you complete the modules in order, as each builds upon the information and concepts detailed in the previous pod. This will provide a fluid and comprehensive approach to studying the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Module 1: Introduction
An Introduction to CCSS for Mathematics - Maine Specific: PowerPoint | PDF
A brief introduction to the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) and the formatting of the two math documents, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Appendix A.
CCSS Math Overview: PowerPoint | PDF
A closer look at the format of the two Common Core math documents: the standards and Appendix A.
Common Core State Standards Videos
The Hunt Institute and the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) have developed a series of video vignettes that describe and explain the Common Core State Standards. In the videos, key Standards writers talk about how the Standards were developed, who was involved, and the goals they set for all students.

Module 2: Alignment
Pod 1
WEBINAR: Issues of Alignment: Common Core State Standards in Maine(Originally presented 6/22/11)
The Common Core State Standards for ELA and Math have been adopted by the Maine Legislature. Full transition to these standards is expected by the 2014/2015 school year. In an effort to support the transitioning work, the Maine Department of Education presents another webinar in the CCSS series: Issues of Alignment: Common Core State Standards in Maine, with MDOE Mathematics Specialist Michele Mailhot.
This presentation explores the topic of alignment to standards, definitions of what it means to be aligned, and suggests methods for determining degree of alignment in your school or classroom. Several resources for supporting curriculum work and standards transition are offered. Participants should have a copy of the Common Core State Standards ready for perusal during the session. The document can be found at http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/math/standards.html.

Pod2
Exploring the Progression of Domains Within the Common Core State Standards
Use the documents below to explore the progression of the domains within the Common Core State Standards. See how the development of the domain progresses vertically (k-12) and how the domains support one another.
Module 3: Implementation
Pod 1
An in-depth exploration of the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Use these resources to help in exploring and unpacking the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice. The links for deepening your understanding are video vignettes with examples of the practices at various different grade levels. This will help you to see the progression of the Mathematical Practices over the K-12 continuum. Use the worksheet to jot down your observations, thoughts and comments as you watch the videos, teacher interviews, and read the paragraph descriptions of the Mathematical Practices.
Pod 2
A series of four webinars designed to help develop a better understanding of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. These webinars are grade span specific: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and High School. District participation will create a K-12 continuum of the 8 Mathematical Practices and CCSS. Each webinar looks at alignment of the eight Mathematical Practices to the Common Core State Standards. This will help make connections of the “how” and the “what” for which students will be held accountable.
It is expected that participants have completed previous work getting to know the layout of the Common Core Standards document and the 8 Mathematical Practices.
Prior to viewing the webinars, please download/print off...
