Tips for Getting Involved
Educate Yourself
You need to know what's going on around you. Using multiple sources to get your information will allow you to have a broader, more well rounded perspective of varying viewpoints and opinions!
- Read newspapers and watch/listen to the news on the TV or radio.
- Get Maine news.
- Read national news.
- Investigate international news.
- Visit your local library for more books, newspapers and magazines!
- Talk to your parents, mentors and friends about voting and the issues.
- Know the local issues facing Mainers.
- Learn about national and global issues.
- Listen to what others have to say.
- Be open to viewpoints different from your own. You might actually learn something!
- Stay in school. Finishing high school and continuing your education is one of the best ways to keep educating yourself.
- Do service-learning! (Combining real problem-solving in the community with academic learning and instruction)
- Service-Learning can and should happen across all grade-levels, from kindergarten through college!
- Stay informed through direct sources.
- For example: watch the local school board meeting on television; read laws and documents in their original form.
