Candidates for Governor, the Legislature, and county office must register and file campaign finance reports with the Ethics Commission. Candidates should appoint a treasurer and register with the Commission before raising or spending any funds.

Candidates running for municipal office in certain towns and cities must register and file campaign finance reports with the municipal clerk.

For more information about the requirements for candidates, please look at the other sections of this website, especially Guide to Political Activity and Maine Clean Election Act or contact the Commission at 287-4179.

The Commission has also published for gubernatorial candidates and legislative and county candidates:

2014 Gubernatorial Candidate's Guide

2014 Candidate's Guide for MCEA Legislative Candidates

2014 Candidate's Guide for Traditionally Financed Legislative and County Candidates

The Secretary of State's office provides a Candidate's Guide to Ballot Access. The Guide describes the requirements and procedures for candidates to gain access to the ballot. It also provides instructions for completing and circulating nomination petitions.
