Outdoor’s people and businesses supporting Maine’s Fish and Wildlife Department’s Landowner Relations Program
The Supersport Landowner Relations Program continually works to ensure recreational access to Maine’s outdoors. A Supersport designation does not allow any hunting or fishing privileges, but money generated by the sale of Supersport designations goes directly to support the Landowner Relations Program of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Maine has a unique history of public access to private land. Approximately 94% of the state’s land area is privately owned and more than 10 million acres of working farms and forests are open to the public. The Landowner Relations Program is a special service that seeks to maintain that tradition by promoting responsible use as well as addressing problems.
Proactively, the program has produced brochures on “Landowner Liability Explained” and “Access to Private Land is a Privilege Not a Right.” Among the problems the program has addressed are property damage, illegal dumping and trespass, all of which would have lead to land closure (posting) if not resolved to the satisfaction of the landowner. Although it is a statewide program, the conflict resolution emphasis is on smaller parcels in rural and suburban areas, where the potential for conflict/access denial is greatest.
A Supersport can be purchased through our online store for $20.00: residents, nonresidents, hunters, anglers, trappers, hikers, kayakers, canoeists, nature watchers, bicyclists and guides can all become a Supersport. Even if you do not buy a license, you can still purchase a Supersport designation wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold. You can also call Kristina at 207-287-5244.
