August 19, 2009 Delaware Teen Seriously Injured in ATV Incident Augusta, Maine - A 17-year-old man was seriously injured when he traveled around a sharp corner on an ATV, left a trail and was thrown between two trees. The teen, who is from Rehoboth, Delaware, was driving an ATV behind a 17-year-old friend, also from Delaware, on private association trails at Mile 10 Camp Association in Upper Enchanted Township when the incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18. The injured teen lost control of the ATV when negotiating a turn, and was thrown between a birch and spruce tree, according to Game Warden Ray Miller. The ATV was stopped by both trees and did not land on the teen, Warden Miller said. The teen was transported by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he is undergoing surgery for neck and back injuries, according to Warden Miller. Both teens were not wearing helmets. The friend was not injured. Speed was a factor in the incident, which remains under investigation. |
