September 10, 2009 Body of St. Agatha Man Recovered from Long Lake Augusta, Maine - Divers from the Maine Warden Service Dive Team today recovered the body of a 29-year-old St. Agatha man who went missing in Long Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 9, while trying to retrieve a recreational water tube for some kids at Birch Point in Madawaska.
Divers from the Maine Warden Service on Thursday, September 10, recover the body of Kareen A. Shaik, 29, of St. Agatha, who went missing during a swimming accident the day before on Long Lake near Birch Point in Madawaska. Kareem A. Shaik, 29, of St. Agatha entered the water after 4 p.m. on Wednesday to get the water tube as it was drifting away. As he was swimming to it, Mr. Shaik began to struggle and went under the water, witnesses told the Maine Warden Service.

Brian Gray, it was first reported to the MWS that Mr. Shaik was trying to get a child’s float toy. Instead, it was a recreational tube that is pulled behind a boat. The kids were using it as a float in the water. Mr. Shaik was recovered at 10:15 a.m. today, Sept. 10, 2009 by the Maine Warden Service Dive Team, and his body was taken to Michaud Funeral Home in St. Agatha. He was located in 9 feet of water approximately 100 yards from shore.
Members of the Maine Warden Service and its dive team search Long Lake on Thursday morning for Kareem A. Shaik, 29, of St. Agatha. A representative from the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death later tonight. Public safety officials from Madawaska Police Department, Madawaska Fire and Ambulance, Fort Kent Ambulance, and an Edmundston, New Brunswick, dive team assisted in the search. The incident is under investigation by the Maine Warden Service. |
