Statement of Maine Warden Service Col. Joel Wilkinson, Chief Game Warden, On Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center Incident

Augusta, Maine - On Thursday, July 8, two Maine Warden Service game wardens were involved in a fatal shooting incident of an armed male at the Route 17 gate of Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Augusta.

Any loss of life is a tragedy; however I am relieved that no law enforcement officer was injured or killed during this confrontation.

Maine Warden Service Sgt. Ron Dunham, a member of the Maine Warden Service since 1997, and Game Warden Joe Lefebvre, a member of the Maine Warden Service since 1995, witnessed the confrontation between the man and a Togus police officer, and stopped to aid the Togus officer.

Sgt. Dunham and Warden Lefebvre have been placed on administrative leave with pay in accordance with Maine Warden Service policies.

An independent, internal review of the incident will take place.

The Maine Warden Service is fully cooperating in the lawful process of investigation being conducted by the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
