August 14, 2012 Hikers found after getting lost on Reed Mountain Augusta, Maine - Last night at approximately 10 p.m., the Maine Warden Service was notified that friends Raven Joseph, 20, of Queens, NY and Jamie Snook, 16, of Merrimac, MA had failed to return to their remote camp on the shore of Big Reed Pond. Jamie’s father, Hilary Snook, 56, of Merrimac, arrived at the camp that evening expecting to meet Jamie and Raven and started a brief search when they were not there. He then contacted a local sporting camp owner and the Warden Service was notified. Two area wardens went into the camp and initiated a more thorough search and six more wardens were called in at daylight, including two K-9s and a Warden Service airplane. The girls were located at approximately 9 a.m. this morning a little more than a mile away from the camp near Reed Deadwater. They were tired and scratched, but in relatively good shape. They told wardens that they had hiked to Reed Mountain to the north of the camp in the late afternoon, but missed the camp on the return trip after the compass in an iPhone they were carrying failed. The Maine Warden Service reminds outdoor enthusiasts to always be prepared while hiking in the field and to carry a light, matches, a compass, and plenty of water. It’s also a good idea to leave a note or let someone know where you are going and when you will return. |
