December 31, 2012 Snowmobile Through Ice/Missing Snowmobilers - Western Maine RANGELY LAKE – SNOWMOBILE THROUGH ICE – DECEMBER 31, 2012: At approximately 7:00 PM last evening, game wardens responded to Rangeley Lake to investigate a call of a snowmobile through the ice. A mother (age 45) and son (age 16) from Maine were travelling on separate snowmobiles when the mother’s machine went through the ice. Her son was following her and also started to break through the ice. He was able to jump to solid ice and get to shore and call 911. The mother did not surface. At this time game wardens are planning recovery efforts to include the Maine Warden Service Dive Team and a Warden Service aircraft. CARRABASSETT VALLEY – MISSING SNOWMOBILERS – DECEMBER 31, 2012: In a separate incident, game wardens are also investigating three missing snowmobilers in the Carrabassett Valley region. Three men left from Carrabassett at approximately 6:00 PM and were last heard from in Eustis. They have not been seen since. Game wardens searched during the night in extreme conditions and have resumed efforts this morning.
