Requesting Data

MDIFW provides digital copies of its wildlife habitat data upon request. All data are provided as Geographic Information System (GIS) shapefiles – you must have appropriate GIS software to use this digital data! You can download the free GIS software ArcReader from ESRI. All data are provided in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection, North American Datum (NAD) 83, Zone 19 North.

Essential Wildlife Habitats

  • *Bald Eagle Nesting Sites
  • *Roseate Tern Nesting Areas
  • *Piping Plover/Least Tern Nesting, Feeding, & Brood-rearing Areas

Significant Wildlife Habitats

  • *Seabird Nesting Islands
  • Deer Wintering Areas
  • Inland Waterfowl/Wading bird Habitat
  • Shorebird Areas
  • Tidal Waterfowl/Wading bird Habitat

*Statewide dataset is available to download from Maine Office of GIS GeoLibrary.

Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern Species Note – this data generally is not provided as a statewide dataset. For large-area requests in unorganized townships, permission of specific landowners may be required.

To request a digital copy of MDIFW’s wildlife habitat data, fill out a data request form PDF, and return it to: Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Habitat Group Leader, 650 State St., Bangor, ME 04401-5654.
