National Public Radio Online - Listen to audio broadcasts of the day’s news or search the archives.  Order tapes and transcripts.

Federal government and policy
Capitol Spotlight - Weekly news that highlights a key vote on Capitol Hill.  Track key bills and key votes.  Includes video clips relating to the lead story and an archive using C-Span and Congressional Quarterly reporting.

 

OMB Watch - Tracks federal government issues and matters of public interest in particular budget and government performance, regulatory matters, access to information, and nonprofit issues.  Adds several brief stories each month. Has a liberal bias.

The Drudge Report - Worldwide breaking news stories from many sources and a lot more.  Links to columnists pages, newswires, press releases, major papers and magazines.  Includes archives and a reference desk.

CNN.com Law News - Coverage of top legal stories and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jurist - Continuously updated coverage of ongoing legal issues.  Long list of legal topics leads to links to news stories.

Legal News (WashLaw) - General links to legal news sources as well as groupings by legal topic. 

LexisONE Legal News - News excerpts and links from national wires and major newspapers.  Newsworthy decisions and pages specific to an area of law.  

USA Legal Newspapers - A limited number of state and local legal newspapers published weekly or daily in the US which report what is happening in the profession, news of attorneys and judges, court monitor, etc.  Some require registration to see full text.

Maine News Index Online -  Includes abstracts and citations for Portland and Maine periodicals which Portland Public Library staff have compiled since 1993, including Down East, MaineBiz, Portland Monthly, and the Portland Phoenix.
Maine Newspapers - More than 20 Maine daily and weekly newspapers available online through this quick, accessible list of titles.

Maine Newspapers & Magazines - Online Maine newspapers, arranged alphabetically by town covered, and specialty publications, arranged by broad topic. Some entries include descriptions of the paper's coverage.

NewsLibrary - Searchable archive of regional and state newspapers, including the Portland Press Herald (1994-) and Boston Globe (1979-). Can search individual or multiple papers by keyword(s) or phrases. The excerpts are free and useful for verifying article dates and subject matter. Single full-text articles are $2.95 with other pricing options available.

NewspaperLinks  - Find the homepages of U.S. daily and weekly newspapers, Canadian and international daily newspapers, newspaper groups, associations and other media organizations.

U.S. Newspaper Archives on the Web - Access the home page or the archives search page of major daily papers from each state.  Describes the dates of coverage and costs of retrieving full text of articles.

State government and policy
Governing - Brief excerpts about state news from papers around the US.  Links to full text.  Excerpts maintained for a few days.  

National Conference of State Legislatures - NCSL news items since 1999.  Articles written by NCSL on state legislative issues:  elections, significant court opinions, news about NCSL, reports, etc.  Search NCSLnet for reports and background information on issues.  Links to capital city newspapers.

National Governors Association - News releases, policy positions and opinions of  NGA and links for governors’ media contacts.

Stateline - Leading stories from today’s news, background information, data and staff writer stories relating to current state government issues.  Tracked by the Pew Center on the States.  Pages organized by date, issue, or state.  Searchable one week archives.

States News (CSG) - CSG provides summaries of today’s news stories on state government issues.  Links to full text articles from papers throughout the country.  Maintains one week in archives.
