Development
Andre Cushing currently is serving his first term as the
Senator for District 33, which includes seventeen communities in Southern Penobscot County; Carmel,
Charleston, Corinna, Corinth, Dexter, Dixmont, Etna, Exeter, Garland, Glenburn, Hampden,
Kenduskeag, Levant, Newburgh, Newport, Plymouth, and Stetson.
Senator
Cushing has been a small business owner for more than 30 years and is currently a
realtor and a home builder.
His experience in business has provided him valuable perspective when dealing with
legislative issues. Additionally, he has been engaged in public service as a member
of two town councils, a land use review board, charter review board, and member of the
Penobscot County Budget Committee. Most recently Cushing completed six years on
the Hampden Town Council, where he served as deputy mayor.
His past legislative service
includes two terms as a state representative in the
Maine House of Representatives. In the 124th Legislature, he served as the ranking Republican
member of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor; upon
re-election to the 125th
Legislature, he was selected by his colleagues as the Assistant Majority Leader and was House
chair of the Elections Committee and Rules
Committee.
Senator Cushing grew up in Bangor
and attended John Bapst High School and the University of Maine. An advocate of community
service, he has served on the board of numerous civic and community organizations, from
Jaycees, Rotary and Kiwanis, the EMMC Children's Miracle Network, and Black Bear United
Football Club. He also has been an active member of the Hampden Business Association helping
to plan and implement their annual business of the year award dinner and "Welcome to
Hampden" program. As a member of the town council's Communication Committee he produced
more than 100 cable television shows on local events and
individuals.
He and his wife, Gwen, have three
adult children: Grace, Andre IV and Gerald.
