Maine Senate
All members of the 124th Maine
Senate have been elected to serve a two-year term. Of the 35 members,
there are 20 Democrats and 15 Republicans. Eight are women (6
Democrats; 2 Republicans) and 27 are men (14 Democrats; 13
Republicans). There are 10 new members; 6 have recently served in the
House of Representatives, 2 are former House members, and 2 have no
previous legislative experience. Twenty-five members are incumbents.
Twenty-seven members have prior legislative service in the House of
Representatives. The combined legislative experience of the 124th
Senate totals 318 years. The average age for a Senator this session is
55.
Senator Joseph C. Brannigan of
Cumberland has the distinction of being the senior member of the Senate,
while Senator Seth A. Goodall of Sagadahoc is the junior member this
session. Senator Peter Mills of Somerset has the longest overall Senate
service, 6th term beginning in the 117th (1994), he now begins his
seventh term in the Senate. Senator Joseph C. Brannigan of Cumberland,
beginning his 13th term, is the Senator with the longest overall
legislative service. Senator Smith is the Senator who has served in the
earliest Legislature, having been elected to the House in the 105th
(1971). Senator Bill Diamond served in the earliest Senate, the 111th
(1982).
Twenty-two Senators are Maine natives,
11 of them were born in a community they currently represent. The
remaining Senators were born in Alabama (1), California (1), Ireland
(1), Massachusetts (4), Maryland (1), New York (3), South Carolina (1),
and Virginia (1).
By way of occupation, the Senate is
composed as follows: 7 members are or have been attorneys; 5 members are
or have been in education; 3 members are or have been in the health and
social services professions; 13 are or have been business owners,
consultants or workers; 3 members are in Forestry; 1 member is a
Holstein breeder; 5 members are retired; 5 members consider legislative
service their full-time occupation.
Members who will not be able to run for election to the Senate in 2010
due to term-limits are: Sen. Bruce Bryant of Oxford, Sen. Dennis Damon
of Hancock, Sen. Richard Nass of York, Sen. Carol Weston of Waldo.
