Oxford County Installs River Level Sensors
September 1, 2006

The monitor will be solar powered. Photo by Alison Aloisio, Bethel Citizen. Oxford County is taking steps to improve water level monitoring in the Androscoggin River. A water-monitoring sensor was installed this week next to the recreational bridge in Bethel. The electronic device will automatically alert the Oxford County Regional Communications Center in South Paris if the water rises to a set level indicative of flooding. After the initial alert, the sensor will provide continuous information on water levels. According to Scott Parker, Director of the Oxford County Emergency Management Agency, the monitor can also assist personnel at the Shelburne Dam in New Hampshire as they decide how much water to release through the dam, and provide information for state river monitoring agencies. Similar devices are being installed in Canton and Rumford. The funding for the monitors is provided through a federal grant. (Story courtesy of Alison Aloisio).
