September Focus on Preparedness Highlights Year-Round Emergency Management Activities
September 1, 2007
Getting prepared starts with talking. Talking with your family, talking with your neighbors, talking with your local officials. September is National Preparedness Month, and Governor John Baldacci will highlight it as Preparedness Month in Maine as well. But MEMA Director Rob McAleer sees it as an opportunity to highlight the year-round focus of emergency management on disaster preparedness. "At the state, county and local levels there are activities going on every day that prepare us better for emergencies," McAleer says. "The national and statewide focus on preparedness this September gives us a chance to highlight their work." However, McAleer says, there is more that all of us can do. "Responsibility for disaster preparedness and resilience starts in every home, neighborhood and small or large business. This is a good time to look around and say, 'How can we be better prepared?'" MEMA maintains the "Maine Prepares" website, dedicated to providing simple steps to improving disaster preparedness. "Maine prepares. It's part of who we are," McAleer says. "But we can always do more and do better. Visit us online at http://www.maineprepares.com to learn how. "
