Training Announcement: Basic Public Information Officer Course (G290)

The Maine Emergency Management Agency will conduct the Federal Emergency Management Agency training program Basic Public Information Officer Course (G290) September 25th and 26th, 2012 in Portland, Maine.
The course will be held at the Portland Water District Nixon Training Center located at 225 Douglass Street in Portland, ME. Classes will run from 8:15 to 4:30 daily.
Breaks and lunch will be provided, lodging is available on a per case basis; please contact MEMA for further details on eligibility. All other expenses are the responsibility of the student.
This 2 day course is intended for the new or less experienced PIO (in order to be NIMS compliant all agencies must have a designated and trained Public Information Officer.). Program emphasis is on the basic skills and knowledge needed for emergency management public information activities.
Topics include the role of the PIO in emergency management, conducting awareness campaigns, news release writing public speaking, and television interviews. Completion of FEMA Public Information Officer Awareness Course (G 289) or the online IS 29 is a prerequisite for attendance of the program, certificate must accompany application.
Preference will be given to State, County and local emergency management and emergency services staff who have either full or part time direct responsibility for public information in their communities or departments.
Applicants will include an organizational chart indicating their position in local or departmental public information functions. Students should bring copies of their organization's Public Information plan and laptop computers if available.
Lynette Miller, MEMA PIO, and Mike Grant, MEMA Training Officer will serve as instructors.
