Windjammer 2009 Full Scale Exercise
October 17, 2009
On Saturday, October 17, Knox EMA conducted a full scale exercise which took place at the Camden Hills High School in Rockport. The exercise involved a suspect creating an explosive device in the school and a bus carrying a sports team which was overturned due to a hazardous material explosion. This exercise was the first of its kind in Knox County. American Red Cross and the State of Maine Disaster Behavioral Health Team set up family assistance centers to practice assisting parent of the students involved as the students played the parts of victims throughout the exercise. Pen-Bay Medical Center activated their Mass Casualty Plan and were prepared to treat the patients coming to the hospital. Camden and Rockport responders were in charge of the scene at the school. Mutual aid was called in from the Rockland Hazmat Team and Camden First Aid cared for the injured who were on scene. Maine State Police, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Rockport PD and Camden PD located and arrested the suspect. This exercise demonstrated the importance of interagency relationships. The school’s plan worked very well. However, as a result of this exercise, more training will be in the works for all involved. Several photos have been uploaded to MEMA's page on Facebook. For more information on exercising your plan, contact your County Emergency Management Agency or Maine Emergency Management Agency.
