How to Help Haiti

MEMA recommends the following information for those wanting to help with disaster recovery, or find more information on the disaster.

How to Help:

Monetary donations to a trusted relief organization are the best way to help in the earthquake recovery in Haiti.

• Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund: Earthquake recovery effort headed up by former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton
• Text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill
• List of relief organizations working in Haiti, endorsed by USAID
• AidMatrix online portal for donations to relief organizations working in Haiti (Aidmatrix is a partner with the State of Maine for disaster donations)

Potential for Fund-raising Fraud:

• FBI Warning on possible fund-raising scams over the Internet
• The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) top-rated list of charities involved in Haitian earthquake relief efforts. AIP is a leading charity watchdog that issues letter grade (A+ to F) ratings of nonprofit groups
• Report suspected Internet or e-mail fraud
