Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Watches Two Approaching Storms

AUGUSTA, MAINE —Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is monitoring the winter snowstorm that is forecast to begin Saturday evening through Sunday. Currently the greatest accumulation will occur in Southern Maine and along the coast. With cold temperatures expected, the snow should remain light and fluffy and is not anticipated to cause widespread power outages. Currently CMP is not expecting large impacts.

While this storm is not expected to have major impacts statewide, Maine people should be aware of a more significant storm moving in late Tuesday evening January 9th into Wednesday, January 10th. It is too soon to know what the full impact may be, but the forecast calls for a mix of wind, heavy rain, and snow and sleet possible. This weather event may cause hazardous driving conditions among other concerns mid-week. MEMA will work with the National Weather Service, Maine’s major utility companies, state, and local partners to monitor as the storm approaches New England to strategize accordingly and will release more information at the appropriate time.

“If you have plans to travel on Sunday, you may consider altering those plans. Make sure your vehicle is in good working order before you hit the road and that you have an emergency car kit and supplies handy, should you need them,” said MEMA Director Pete Rogers. “We also want Maine people to be aware that another significant storm appears to be approaching next Tuesday into Wednesday that may bring wind, heavy rain, and snow and sleet. We urge Maine people to continue to follow forecasts and to prepare themselves in advance.”

An emergency car kit should include but is not limited to the following items:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Ice scraper with a brush
  • Car cell phone charger
  • Blanket
  • Map
