Utility Rates & Information

Maine has 10 consumer-owned utilities and 3 investor-owned utilities providing electricity everywhere....street lights, ballparks, malls, homes, and offices. As citizens of Maine we depend tremendously upon reliable electricity.

Since 2000 the electric industry in Maine has changed. Electric utility companies continue to own and operate the distribution (wire) infrastructure bringing electricity to customers in its service territory, but they do not provide the energy used by customers. The electricity is supplied by competitive providers. The Public Advocate Office advocates on behalf of Mainers regarding the rates and fees charged by the electric utilities when they are reviewed and considered by the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
