Dear Maine Library Directors, Members of Governing Bodies and Town Officials:

I am pleased to write to you on behalf of the members of the Maine Library Association, to introduce you to our 2008 Minimum Salary Guidelines for public library employees. These guidelines are intended to update the salary recommendations in the 2007 Maine Public Library Standards, which your library should already have on hand. Additional copies are available for download from our web site, www.mainelibraries.org.

It is my sincere hope that library decision makers will carefully consider these salary recommendations, with an eye towards steadily improving compensation in Maine’s 273 public libraries. The basic approach has been to align our public library employee salaries with statewide entry level salaries in school systems. I encourage you to look at pay scales in your own communities and make the suggested comparisons.

Thanks very much for your dedication to enrich your community though library services.

Kind regards,

Rich Boulet, MLIS
2007-2008 President
