The
institute's mission is to connect the fields of developmental
biology and immunobiology.
"This
is really a double honor," says Jackson Laboratory Director
Rick Woychik, Ph.D., "because the appointment carries
with it membership in the prestigious Max Planck Society
for the Advancement of Science."
With
81 institutes, more than 11,000 employees and more than
7,500 independent and visiting scientists, the Max Planck
Society is one of the leading organizations for basic
research in Europe. Since its founding in 1948, the
Max Planck Society has produced 15 Nobel Prize laureates.
Senior
Staff Scientist Dr. Knowles, a developmental biologist,
is also The Jackson Laboratory's director of research
and training. She studies the molecular control of the
earliest stages of embryo formation, from fertilization
until implantation in the uterus. The molecular processes
controlling this developmental time are unknown, and
critical to understanding successful development of
the embryo. Dr. Knowles joined the Laboratory in 1993.
The
Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, is a world leader
in mammalian genetics research. With more than 1,200
employees, the nonprofit, independent facility has a
mission to improve the quality of human life through
discoveries arising from its own genetic research and
by enabling the research and education of others.
