BAR HARBOR, Maine – Jackson Laboratory Associate Director Barbara B. Knowles, Ph.D., has been appointed an external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology, based in Freiburg, Germany. The appointment makes Dr. Knowles one of five external members of that Institute, and the only American.

The institute's mission is to connect the fields of developmental biology and immunobiology.

"This is really a double honor," says Jackson Laboratory Director Rick Woychik, Ph.D., "because the appointment carries with it membership in the prestigious Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science."

With 81 institutes, more than 11,000 employees and more than 7,500 independent and visiting scientists, the Max Planck Society is one of the leading organizations for basic research in Europe. Since its founding in 1948, the Max Planck Society has produced 15 Nobel Prize laureates.

Senior Staff Scientist Dr. Knowles, a developmental biologist, is also The Jackson Laboratory's director of research and training. She studies the molecular control of the earliest stages of embryo formation, from fertilization until implantation in the uterus. The molecular processes controlling this developmental time are unknown, and critical to understanding successful development of the embryo. Dr. Knowles joined the Laboratory in 1993.

The Jackson Laboratory, founded in 1929, is a world leader in mammalian genetics research. With more than 1,200 employees, the nonprofit, independent facility has a mission to improve the quality of human life through discoveries arising from its own genetic research and by enabling the research and education of others.
